   Buy this first

   Adds: A train station, ticket tiles, visitor cards, a second board, and 100+ new cards with new critters.

   Fixes: Adds more face-up cards to pick from as the deck grows.

   The safest pick: more of the same game, done well. Meeple Mountain ranks it the best boxed expansion and King Panda ranks it second.

   Usually a better fit for a different kind of group — still fine if it sounds fun.

   Number 2: Everdell Pearlbrook

   Worth it

   Adds: A river board, frog ambassadors, pearls to collect, Wonders to build, and new water critters and cards.

   Fixes: Gives you a big goal to build toward beyond your 15-card city.

   King Panda ranks it first, but Meeple Mountain found the race for Wonders pulls focus from the base game. Great if you want a new goal; less so if you like the base game as is.

   Usually a better fit for a different kind of group — still fine if it sounds fun.

   Number 3: Everdell Mistwood

   Depends on your group

   Adds: Nightweave, a spider opponent for solo or 2-player games, plus the Corrin Evertail, Legends II and Through Every Season packs.

   Fixes: Gives solo and 2-player games a smarter rival than the base game's solo opponent.

   Top pick if you play solo or with two. Both rankings like it, but it matters less for bigger groups.

   Opinions split. Weather and Big Critters suit groups that like surprises; planners may find it frustrating.

   Fixes: Lets 5 or 6 people play.

   Only needed if you often play with 5-6. Both rankings put it last among the big boxes.

   Only if you know you want everything. It is heavy and costly, and one reviewer skipped it because he only uses one expansion at a time.

   Includes the base game, so nothing else is needed.
